New features in the Bookshare website

Bookshare is excited to announce some new features coming in early 2012. Our team has worked hard on new tools and options to make using Bookshare even better. Here is a preview! We will tell you more about these changes before they go live.

  • Audio Book Formats – Bookshare members will soon be able to listen to books on MP3 players or any device that can play MP3; DAISY audio playable on MP3 players and other technologies will follow soon thereafter. In addition, we will provide a file manager that will make downloading, organizing, and transferring your books easy.
  • My Downloads – The My Downloads section will make it easier to find or search the books you have downloaded in the past, check the status of books that are still in the process of being prepared, and easily re-download books if you need them.
  • Simplified Download Process – You will be able to set global download preferences for book formats. This will make it faster and easier for members or teachers to download books on behalf of students in their preferred format every time. You will also still be able to easily select the format type each time you find a book.
  • New functionality that will make the administrative functions much easier for larger accounts, including the ability to filter by school and district and generate the list of the books they have downloaded that includes the student for whom each book was downloaded and the date on which each book was downloaded.

Intel Teach: Elements Online

Intel Teach: Elements Online is a new series of five (5) online, instructor-guided, professional development courses offered by the LDOE’s Office of College and Career Readiness, Louisiana Virtual School Program.  Each course provides teachers with new tools and new ideas for use directly in their classroom. Through the use of an online environment, teachers will now be able to complete professional development on their own schedule and without the requirement of travel or days out of the classroom.  Each online course takes 6 weeks complete and offers the teacher the opportunity to earn 23 CLU’s. Please share this information with your teachers.

The 5 courses are:

1.      Collaboration in the Digital Classroom provides teachers with strategies for building collaborative activities using online tools that support connection and sharing in and beyond the classroom.
2.      Project-Based Approaches helps teachers improve their understanding and application of project-based approaches in the 21st century classroom.
3.      Assessment in 21st Century Classrooms shows teachers ways to improve assessment of 21st century skills with new assessment strategies and tools for assessing 21st century skills.
4.      Thinking Critically with Data helps teachers support thinking critically with data quality, display, and interpretation in students’ rapidly changing and busy world of information access.
5.      Educational Leadership for the 21st Century helps school principals and district administrators support teacher effectiveness for student achievement through technology integration.

The first session of Assessment in 21st Century Classrooms begins November 21, 2011. To register for the course, please go to http://www.solutionwhere.com/ldoe/cw/showcourse.asp?3451.  Information on the other courses will be released later during the school year.  For more information, please contact Allen Childress at allen.childress@la.gov
